Consumer units - what are they?

Still calling it a fuse box? In most modern homes it’s actually a consumer unit - the main control centre for your property’s electrics.

Your consumer unit manages the individual electrical circuits around your home, including lighting, sockets, cookers, immersion heaters, smoke alarms, outdoor power supplies and EV charging. During an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report), we check your consumer unit and protective devices to make sure everything is operating correctly and safely.

More than just a switchboard, a consumer unit is a critical safety device. If a fault occurs, it’s designed to cut power quickly (via RCD/RCBO protection), helping to reduce the risk of electric shock, overheating and electrical fires - protecting your home and everyone in it.

Need an EICR in Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire or West Cheshire?
Fuze Electrical provides professional electrical testing and inspections for homeowners, landlords and businesses across the region.

Ready for an upgrade?

It’s recommended that electrical installations are inspected at least every 10 years - & every 5 years for rented properties, or at each change of tenancy. If you’re moving into a new home, it’s also the ideal time to arrange an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) to confirm your electrics, including the consumer unit  are safe & compliant.

At Fuze Electrical, we provide a tailored consumer unit replacement service across Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire and West Cheshire, designed around your property & how you use it - whether that’s electric cooking, showers, outbuildings, hot tubs or EV charging.

All consumer unit upgrades are completed to the latest 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). Where suitable, we install modern RCBO consumer units with surge protection, helping to protect sensitive electronics from voltage spikes & improving overall safety and reliability.

If your consumer unit looks tired, trips frequently, or you still have an older rewireable fuse box, get in touch. We’re happy to offer free advice & a no-obligation quote to bring your electrics up to today’s safety standards - & if you need an EICR in Wrexham or the surrounding areas, we can help with that too.
